BLUR no. 44

August / September 2015

This summer has been full of temperature surprises. A long period of hot days that were reaching almost 40 degrees (Celsius), and sudden temperature drops to 20 degrees with stormy winds and rain. I don’t remember the last time it was so difficult to finish a new issue. But as things stand, here it is for you to enjoy :).

I hope that next year I will be wise enough and somehow finish it in advance, at least a couple of months earlier. That’s how I could completely forget about it and then, on vacation, I could read it and enjoy the beautiful photos just like you do.

Robert Gojević, founder and editor in chief

CLOSE UP

Dean West, Australia

Info

“My inspiration comes from my own questions on mortality—how does one find meaning in their life. I’m interested in philosophy, art, and cinema. Igenerally would say my ideas come from these three core areas.“

PROJECT

Damir Matijević, Croatia

Info

“I love walking and observing life around me. It’s like nostalgia for the unknown; it is the joy of discovery. Our visual world is full of surprises; you never know what you’ll discover, and you can always find some emotional expression that will touch you or fill you.”

WET PLATE

Dmitry Donskoy, Russia

Info

“Moscow-based fine art photographer Dmitry Donskoy considers wet plate collodion to be the high end of photo art. Dmitry has been shown in lots of exhibitions and art publications, mostly work done on black and white film. He has worked for more than 23 years in advertising and fashion/beauty photography and can draw a clear distinction between commercial and art work“

INSTANTION

Boris Zuliani, Vietnam

Info

“The death of Polaroid as a format has been foretold often. But it persists. Boris makes nearly all of his personal photography with any Polaroid film he can obtain. For this series he made light paintings using outdated Polaroid film.”

PLAYSTICK

Eddie Mallin, Ireland

Info

“The images are from an ongoing project on Dublin, Ireland, often affectionately referred to as the “Dirty old town project.” I create dark moody images on film of the Dublin cityscape and landscape. A lot of the images are made in low, winter light, which is my favorite time to shoot. The camera of choice is nearly always the Holga in these situations, a cheap plastic camera with a soft lens that gives a central sharpness and some dark edge vignetting.”

PINHOLE

Meghan Powell, USA

Info

“Each image is a story: showing fragmented realities, subtle truths, and a fragile uncertainty. This series explores the instability I feel within my dreams. Every night I find myself grasping for something to hold on to, but never quite finding it. In Between allows the viewer to create their own dream within mine; to become lost somewhere between reality and illusion.”

TETRA

Nicolas Rottiers, France

Info

Nicolas Rottiers is a French graphic designer and photographer. Shadow and light inspire his stories in which time doesn’t exist. Black and white allows him to work with pure aesthetics and abstraction, to create a surreal world.

WIDE

Jane Fulton Alt, USA

Info

“These photographs are part of a series begun in 2007 when I observed my first controlled prairie burn. I was immediately struck by the burn’s visual and expressive potential as well as the way it evoked themes that are at the core of my photographic work. A controlled burn is deliberately set; its violent, destructive force reduces invasive vegetation so that native plants can continue to prosper.”

OPEN

Jaime Erin Johnson, USA

Info

“Untamed chronicles the intimate relationship of a feral woman and her surrounding natural environment. She collects the bones, branches, and flora of her world and treads with the animals, both dead and living. The cyanotype process shifts focus from potentially colorful landscapes and figures to patterns, textures, and the relationships of forms within the images. Psychological and physical discovery reveals each of us is a part of a shared experience. Untamed ultimately reflects upon the forms, the impermanence, and the interconnectedness of nature’s life.“

PROEYECT

Nikola Čubrilo, Serbia

Info

“In this project I tried to visualize this – I created her before and after Pluto took her. The black and white portrait represents her as a pretty young girl, and the cool and warm tones of the second photo represent the change in her life and the change of the seasons.”
