BLUR no. 59

February / March 2017

KAREN KUEHN

United States

Info

“I think the important part for me is when hired for any project, if I’m valued and respected, then I give all of me to my clients. I love solving problems. To make soulful images that are honest about a person, a town, or an object. It’s all good.”

GEORGE DIGALAKIS

Greece

Info

“My work turns away from representation, conceptualism, and the endless search for meaning, and focuses on the wonder of beauty and simplicity.”

INA ECHTERNACH

Germany

Info

“In this ongoing series I describe my relationship to nature, the forest, and trees. Nature and the forest are both a base and a refuge, always new and different. I try to capture this magic of becoming, life and misdemeanor in my Polaroid triptychs.”

MARKY KAUFFMANN

United States

Info

„Why do I make landscapes? The answer is twofold. In part, I make them because the outside world always seemed less dangerous than the inside world of my childhood. If I ever felt safe, it was outside. And partially, it’s because my grandmother created land-scapes of a sort—beautiful flower arrangements—that captured my young imagination.“

SASCHA RICHTER

Germany

Info

„“Mountainland” surveys the lives and societies of upland Southeast Asia, with reference to the geographical and socio-scientific concept of Zomia, which understands the region as culturally different from the respective dominant lowland societies and tries to challenge the widespread perception and narrative of the cultural unity of Southeast Asia as a region. It highlights the classical lifestyle of the mountain dwellers vis-à-vis the respective lowland societies and documents their daily struggle for existence.“

JULIE DE WAROQUIER

France

Info

“Between dreams and reality, I create pictures that look like they escaped from imagination, which disturb the categories of the material world. The better to get back to our world, however, with eyes fed by unusual, yet familiar, visions.”

ALESSANDRO VITALI

Italy

Info

“Since April 25, 2015, when a terrible earthquake struck Nepal, the tiny Asian nation has entered a spiral from which it seems impossible to get out of on their own. On that occasion, more than 8,000 people died and hundreds of thousands of buildings between Kathmandu and the surrounding areas were rendered unusable or destroyed.”

CORY ZIMMERMAN

United States

Info

“The late detective writer Raymond Chandler once wrote, “Down these mean streets a man must go, who is not himself mean, neither tarnished nor afraid.” As I traveled the United States by rail during 2015 through 2016, I knew what I was seeing before my eyes, yet I still struggled to find a common thread to link the moments I was freezing in time.”

LEONARDO MAGRELLI

Italy

Info

“The MeError project collects a series of short circuits, of visual errors. Apparently they are simple photos taken in front of a mirror: we should see ourselves reflected in it, but we don’t, as if we were invisible. In other words, these pictures show us what mirrors reflect when we are not in front of them. Real images that exist in the world, but that we can never witness, for we are their own interference.”

MINDAUGAS GABRENAS

Lithuania

Info

“With this series I am back to the theme of dreams. I capture these visions entirely by using my handmade medium format hybrid camera and color film, mostly affected by moldy bread. I collect the moments of a second before awakening. Unexpectedly emerging artifacts, overflowing melting silhouettes—all of this is an everlasting Morpheus Dream, always with us. Timeless and spaceless. Somnia.”

CHRISTIAN REISTER

Germany

Info

“In grainy, blurred, contrasting black and white photography, I show the ordinary, whimsical, disturbing moments, but also the absurdly humorous sides of Berlin nightlife.”

NADAV ARIEL

Israel

Info

“Can the photographers see their subject as they really are, or their habitus? Their surroundings can change the impression dramatically. Can the viewer be a part of the dialog, or is the audience just a bystander?.”
